Sale 769, Lot 124, 1857-89 Kamehameha III Issues (Scott 8-11)1857, 5c Blue, Thin White Wove (8). Clear to ample margins, creased and torn before use, used with United States 1851 12c Black (17), clear to large margins, on cover to Brooklyn, N.Y., Murdock correspondence, for no apparent reason the Honolulu post office applied its red "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Mar. 14" large cds indicating that U.S. postage was not prepaid, both stamps tied by "San Francisco Cal. Apr. 5, 1861" cds, matching "SHIP" and "10" due handstamps; carried on the Yankee (cleared Mar. 14, arrived Apr. 1), which was the first sailing to arrive from Hawaii after the official suspension of the Butterfield stage route due to the impending Civil War - all mail was sent by ship via Panama between April 1 and July 1 (Gregory) - why the 12c 1851 was not accepted in Honolulu cannot be explained; repaired tear thru markings, otherwise Fine, unusual usage
