Sale 769, Lot 120, 1857-89 Kamehameha III Issues (Scott 8-11)1857, 5c Blue, Thin White Wove (8). Large margins except slightly rounded at T.R., just tied by bold red "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Jan. 24" large cds on cover to Franklinville, Long Island, New York, "San Francisco Cal. Feb. 12, 1860 12" integral rate cds and straightline "OVERLAND" handstamp, ms. "Due" note after rate, carried on the Comet (cleared Jan. 24, arrived S.F. Feb. 10), a bit worn and toned with age, still Very Fine, only a few Kamehameha III covers are known with this scarce U.S. route marking; beginning in January 1860 the U.S. post office began forwarding mail from San Francisco by the Butterfield stage service to St. Louis via Los Angeles, unless letters were specifically marked "Via Panama" - the "Overland" handstamp appears to have been an explanatory marking - ex Tows, Adm. Harris, Krug, Rust, with 1960 Friedl certificate
