Sale 1271, Lot 6, Mail to China: Stampless 1856-1862Lacross Wis. Jun. 2 (1858). Blue circular datestamp and matching "Paid 24" in circle handstamp with rate in manuscript on yellow cover to Albert Hastings Markham, H.M.S. Camilla, Admiralty, London and forwarded to Hong Kong, China, red "19" credit handstamp, red London Paid datestamp (Jun. 21), bold red "1858 21 JU 21 I A" crown backstamp, address crossed out and "Hong Kong" written above, minor edgewear and soiling, Very Fine and scarce combination of origin and destination forwarding, Markham eventually became Admiral Sir Albert Hastings Markham, his naval career spanned 50 years and included many exploits, Arctic exploration, as well as some controversy over the sinking of the H.M.S. Victoria in 1893, he also designed the flag of New Zealand, the Camilla was his first ship posting (at age 17) and was involved the Second Opium War
