EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS 2-CENT SPECIAL CROSS-BORDER "FERRIAGE" RATE.

The normal rate to Canada during this time was 6c. The Houlton, Maine, and Woodstock, New Brunswick, post offices were only about ten miles apart and qualified for the special 2c ferriage rate. A similar illustrated cover from the same correspondence was offered in our 2004 sale of the Millard Mack collection (realized $5,250 hammer).
