Germany to Confederate Texas via Washington D.C., 1863.
Folded cover addressed to U.S. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, originated in Stettin, Germany (modern-day Szczecin in Poland) with Sep. 19 (1863) boxed datestamp, red Aachen Sep. 20 transit, red "N. York Am. Pkt. 28 Paid Oct. 6" credit datestamp, docketing on flap states "Stettin Sept. 7, 1863, Theodor Wellman, Encloses letter to the Postmaster at New Braunfels Texas and requests that it may be sent to its destination,"
also with magenta court marking "W. 1063 Oct. 7th, 1863, Apo. Judge Advo.",
Very Fine and a most unusual attempt to have a letter delivered to the Confederacy via the U.S. Secretary of War, the court markings make it apparent that the enclosed letter (which no longer accompanies) did not make it to New Braunfels but further research is warranted
