Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale Number 1061, Lot Number 3503, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 83-100)5c Brown, F. Grill (95), 5c Brown, F. Grill (95)5c Brown, F. Grill (95). Bright shade and crisp impression nicely complemented by blue cancels, clearly-defined grill, perfectly centered with balanced margins, small corner creases at top right not mentioned on accompanying certificate

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 5-CENT F GRILL. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE BLUE CANCEL.

This stamp received P.F. certificate no. 307120 describing it as "Genuine, small corner creases at top right" It subsequently received P.F. certificate no. 312426 with the opinion "it is genuine". The photo on the former shows the top right corner perf folded down. Our detailed examination of the stamp shows another very faint pressed-out corner crease in the top right corner.

With 1997 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $8,000.00) as sound. This is the highest grade awarded and only one other shares it, which was offered in our recent Kirke sale.

Sale Number 1032, Lot Number 3169, 1867-68 Grilled Issue, E and F Grills (Scott 86-101)5c Brown, F. Grill (95), 5c Brown, F. Grill (95)5c Brown, F. Grill (95). Rich color and proof-like impression, clear grill points, perfectly centered with balanced margins, neat strikes of brownish-black target cancel, long and full perforations all around

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE 1868 5-CENT F GRILL IN EXISTENCE. A SUPERB STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT -- COLOR, CANCEL, STRENGTH OF GRILL, CENTERING AND PERFORATIONS.

The statement that followed the Scott 67 in the Kirke collection about the rarity of choice grades with the 5c issue due to the spacing and layout on the plate can be underscored and boldfaced for the 1868 5c F Grill. The stamp offered here defies the norm, possessing wide margins all around and a lightly struck brownish-black target cancel.

Ex Hinrichs and Scarsdale. With 1999 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $8,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only one other

Sale Number 1163, Lot Number 73, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-101)5c Brown, F. Grill, Very Thin Paper (95 var), 5c Brown, F. Grill, Very Thin Paper (95 var)5c Brown, F. Grill, Very Thin Paper (95 var). Well-balanced margins, deep rich color and sharp impression, neat strike of circle of V's cancel

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE WELL-CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 5-CENT F GRILL ON THIN PAPER.

The National Bank Note Co. undoubtedly made various attempts to improve grilling quality and efficiency through modifications in the process. Based on surviving stamps, it appears that one modification involved the use of very thin paper, which probably allowed two or more sheets to be grilled in one pass through the grilling device. The 1c (F), 2c (E and F), 3c (E and F), 5c (F), 10c (F), 12c (F) and 15c (F) are found on this very thin paper. They are scarce, particularly the 5c-15c values.

Ex Merlin. With 2000, 2005 and 2006 P.F. certificates (XF 90). With 1999 and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $2,350.00 with no premium for the paper variety)

Sale Number 1084, Lot Number 3280, 1867-68 Grilled Issue, cont. (Scott 92-101)5c Brown, F. Grill (95), 5c Brown, F. Grill (95)5c Brown, F. Grill (95). Choice centering with uncharacteristically wide margins leaving a white frame all around the design, rosette fancy cancel, deep rich color on fresh paper, clear grill points

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 1868 5-CENT F GRILL IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO FIND WITH WIDE MARGINS ON ALL SIDES.

The narrow space between stamps and large 12-gauge perforations left little opportunity to clear the design. This stamp is an extraordinary exception to the rule.

Ex Natalee Grace. With 1998 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $2,250.00). Only two have graded higher (both at 95).
