Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale 1032, Lot 3149, 1867-68 Grilled Issue, A thru Z Grills (Scott 79-85E)2c Black, Z. Grill (85B). Perfect centering with unusually wide margins all around, clearly-defined grill, bright shade and crisp impression, beautifully cancelled by red segmented cork

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN ASTONISHING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL IN THE FINEST CONDITION ATTAINABLE. THIS SPECTACULAR STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- THE HIGHEST AWARDED.

The plates used to print the Black Jacks did not provide enough space between subjects for the large 12-gauge perf holes. Consequently, most Black Jack stamps have perfs touching the design on one or two sides. This scarcity of four-margined copies multiplies exponentially when the Z Grill is factored into the equation. Only a small quantity of 2c sheets were grilled during the period when the Z device was active -- after the D Grill (Scott 84), the Z is the rarest of Black Jack grilled stamps.

With 2010 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98; SMQ $31,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only one other.

Sale 1247, Lot 164, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-85E)2c Black, Z. Grill (85B). Clearly-defined grill, crisp impression and attractive shade, gorgeous centering with wide and balanced margins, neat strike of rimless grid cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL. THIS IS A DIFFICULT ISSUE TO OBTAIN IN SUCH OUTSTANDING CONDITION.

The plates used to print the Black Jacks did not provide enough space between subjects for the large 12-gauge perf holes. Consequently, most Black Jack stamps have perfs touching the design on one or two sides. This scarcity of four-margin copies multiplies exponentially when the Z Grill is factored into the equation. Only a small quantity of 2c sheets were grilled during the period when the Z device was active -- after the D Grill (Scott 84), the Z is the rarest of Black Jack grilled stamps.

Ex "Natalee Grace". With 1985, 2004 P.F. and 2003 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $12,000.00). Only two grade higher (at 98).

Sale 1245, Lot 1203, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-101)2c Black, Z. Grill (85B). Wonderfully well-centered, wide margins for this notoriously difficult issue, proof-like shade and impression, bright red circle of wedges cancel and rim of New York City circular datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN EXTRAORDINARY USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL. ONE OF THE MOST VISUALLY APPEALING COPIES AVAILABLE.

With 2003 and 2005 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $12,000.00). Only two grade higher (at 98).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

Sale 1245, Lot 1204, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-101)2c Black, Z. Grill (85B). Intense shade and impression, clearly defined grill, unusually wide margins, bold strike of segmented cork cancel, one slightly shorter perf at left

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1867 2-CENT Z GRILL.

With 1999 and 2016 P.F. certificates not mentioning the shorter perf. With 2004 and 2009 P.S.E. certificates with the latter mentioning the shorter perf. Both P.S.E. certificates graded (XF 90; SMQ $4,750.00). Based on centering alone this is a conservative grade -- they no doubt took off points for the slightly shorter perf which is truly insignificant
