Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale Number 961, Lot Number 49, 1867-68 Grilled Issues2c Black, D. Grill (84), 2c Black, D. Grill (84)2c Black, D. Grill (84). Perfectly centered, deep shade, lightly cancelled by blue-black target, full clear grill impression showing the requisite 15 columns of points

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. APART FROM THE A AND Z GRILL RARITIES, THE 2-CENT 1868 D GRILL IS THE RAREST OF ALL GRILLED ISSUES. PROBABLY FEWER THAN TEN COPIES EXIST IN THIS SUPERB CONDITION.

The device equipped with the D Grill was refitted with the E Grill on or about February 9, 1868. Based on the earliest known usages of the 2c D Grill (2/15/68) and 3c E Grill (2/19/68), it is our theory that the conversion from the D to E Grill took place only a day or so after sheets of 2c stamps were first run through the D-equipped machine. The great rarity of 2c D Grills, relative to all other regular-production grills, bears out this theory.

With 1999 P.F. certificate. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90; SMQ $20,600.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and only two others have achieved this grade. Scott Retail for Fine centering

Sale Number 1032, Lot Number 3147, 1867-68 Grilled Issue, A thru Z Grills (Scott 79-85E)2c Black, D. Grill (84), 2c Black, D. Grill (84)2c Black, D. Grill (84). Choice centering for this difficult issue with wide and balanced margins, intense shade on bright paper, clearly-defined grill, cork cancel

EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT D GRILL. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT ISSUE TO OBTAIN IN SOUND AND CENTERED CONDITION.

The 2c D Grill is the rarest of the regular-production 1867-68 Grilled Issues (excluding the 1867 trials and rarest Z Grills), followed in order of scarcity by the 3c Z Grill, the 3c D Grill and the 12c Z Grill. It is our hypothesis that two grilling machines were used simultaneously, and that one of the machines was converted from the D to E Grill on or about Feb. 3, 1868, after a small number of 2c and 3c sheets were run through the D-equipped machine. This was the first time the Black Jack received a grill.

With 1989 and 2005 P.F. certificates (XF 90). With 2007 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85; SMQ $13,000.00 as 85).

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 2-CENT D GRILL.

It is our theory that two grilling machines were used simultaneously, and that one of the machines was converted from the D to E Grill in early 1868, after a small number of 2c sheets were run through the D-equipped machine. This was the first time the Black Jack received a grill.

With 1999 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85; SMQ $13,000.00).
