Price History for US Scott 8 PR in Used 80 Grade
Show Grade on Graph
Show all gradesThree things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):
- It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
- When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
- At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE III. THIS STAMP'S ENORMOUS MARGINS AND LIGHT CANCEL HAVE EARNED IT THE COVETED P.S.E. GRADE OF SUPERB 98 JUMBO -- ONE OF ONLY TWO EXAMPLES TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE.
Type III stamps have breaks in both the top and bottom outer lines (the break is usually wider at the top). This used single stands out among the examples of Scott 8 we have sold over many years. Using Power Search on our website, the extraordinary character of this stamp is demonstrable, with only a couple others comparing favorably, including the other Superb 98 Jumbo (ex Merlin, Sale 1034, lot 28) and a stamp graded 98 with part imprint (ex Curtis, Sale 1084, lot 3040).
With 2012 P.F. and 2010 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $32,500.00). This and the aforementioned Merlin stamp are the only two used examples to achieve the grade of Superb 98 Jumbo, with none higher

Type III stamps have breaks in both the top and bottom outer lines (the break is usually wider at the top). This used single stands out among the examples of Scott 8 we have sold over many years. Using Power Search on our website, the extraordinary character of this stamp is demonstrable. Even the wonderful copy in our recent sale of the Tahoe Collection, which graded XF-Superb 95 and realized $21,000 hammer, falls short of this fantastic stamp. We would not be surprised to see this stamp realize a multiple of the SMQ value for 98.
With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $27,700.00 as 98, unpriced in higher grade). According to the P.S.E. Population Report, this is the only used No. 8 to have been awarded the grade of Superb 98 Jumbo (one 98 is reported, and none graded higher).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING JUMBO USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE III. THIS TYPE IS EXTREMELY RARE WITH THE IMPRINT. THIS IS THE ONLY SOUND EXAMPLE OF TYPE III SHOWING THE IMPRINT WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS. APART FROM THE IMPRINT, THIS IS ALSO ONE OF THE FINEST TYPE III STAMPS IN EXISTENCE, BY VIRTUE OF ITS HUGE BALANCED MARGINS, FACE-FREE CANCEL AND WONDERFUL COLOR AND IMPRESSION.
The Neinken book states, "Stamps from Plate 4 showing part of the imprint are very rare." Looking at the layout of Plate 4 (Neinken book, page 263), the imprint position types are as follows: left pane 31/41L Type IIIa, 51L Type IIIa-III, 61L Type III; right pane 40R Type III, 50/60R Type IIIa, 70R Type III. Therefore, only Positions 61L, 40R and 70R4 are Type III imprint positions (51L is a "swing" position with a smaller break).
Ex Vogel, "Natalee Grace" and Curtis. With 2011 P.F. certificate as a pair with Type IIIa and 2012 P.S.E. certificate as single (Superb 98; SMQ $21,000.00). Only two grade higher (at 98J) and two share this grade.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE III, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS WITHOUT DOUBT ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.
Type III is defined by breaks in the outer lines at both top and bottom. Many Type III stamps have breaks that were created or enlarged by plate wear. Since the wear occurred over a period of time, a majority of stamps of this type (both unused and used) have small breaks in at least one line. The most notable exception is Position 99R2, which has the widest breaks of any Type III position, due to the short transfer during plate entry.
The example of the 1c 1851 Type III offered here is significant for several reasons. The breaks at top and bottom are so wide that it actually approaches those of Position 99R2. The large margins at top and bottom and light cancellation also allow for easy identification of the type. All factors considered -- design, impression, margins and cancel -- this stamp is easily one of the finest in existence.
Ex Sheriff. With 1971 and 1994 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98; SMQ $21,000.00). Only two have graded higher (at 98J) and one other shares this desirable grade.
