Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale 1232, Lot 1069, 1851-60 Issues (Scott 5-47)1c Blue, Ty. II, Plate 3 (7). Position 100L3, original gum, single light hinge mark at top, huge margins including bottom sheet margin, interpane margin at right and portions of adjoining stamps at top and left, deep rich Plate 3 color

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II, GRADED GEM 100 BY P.S.E. AND GEM 100 JUMBO BY THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION. THIS IS VERY RARE AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE FROM PLATE 3.

With 2011 P.F. certificate (Gem 100 Jumbo). With 2016 P.S.E. certificate (OGph, Gem 100; SMQ $18,000.00 as most common plate). Among P.S.E. graded stamps from all plates, only one grades higher and two others share this grade. Scott assigns a 100% premium to No. 7 from Plate 3 versus Plates 1E and 2.

Sale 1150, Lot 543, 1c 1851-56 Issue (Scott 5-9)1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Plate 2, original gum, lightly hinged, enormous margins all around including significant portions of adjoining stamps on three sides (almost a third of the stamp above), rich color, detailed impression

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II. THIS STAMP IS GRADED GEM 100 BY BOTH THE P.F. AND P.S.E.

As the gaps between positions visible on this remarkable single demonstrate, the spacing between stamps left very little room for separation. Most examples have margins either just clear or touching, or into the design. The relative paucity of large multiples in sound condition also contributes to its scarcity with such wide margins.

With 2002 and 2006 P.F. certificates (OGph, Gem 100). With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (OGph, Gem 100; SMQ $19,000.00). Only one has graded higher and two others share this grade. This is the highest grade for an original-gum example we have offered in any of our sales.

Sale 941, Lot 1004, 1851-56 Issue1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Position 4L2, original gum which has been only very lightly hinged, large to huge margins incl. sheet margin at top, brilliant color on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL LIGHTLY-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II.

With 1980 and 1998 P.F. certificates. With 2007 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85; SMQ $1,900.00). The P.S.E. grade is an enigma. In this stamp we have full margins framing the ornamentation on all sides, including the left and right sides, and there is a large top sheet margin. Considering the additional "plus" factors -- lightly-hinged gum and bright fresh color and paper -- we are at a loss to explain how this stamp could have received a grade of less than 90.
