Price History for US Scott 7 in Used 95 Grade
Show Grade on Graph
Show all gradesThree things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):
- It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
- When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
- At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS STUNNING 1851 ONE-CENT STAMP FROM PLATE 1 EARLY, WITH MASSIVE MARGINS ON ALL SIDES, BRILLIANT COLOR AND A BLUE CANCEL, HAS BEEN GRADED GEM 100 JUMBO BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE POSSIBLE ON THE GRADING CHART.
With 1995 P.F. and 2006 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100 Jumbo; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $1,850.00 as 98). This is the highest grade possible and only two others have achieved this grade. Only one has been graded 100, which is an excellent indication of how rare it is to find this imperforate issue in such perfect condition.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING AND MASSIVE STAMP, WHICH HAS RECEIVED THE ULTIMATE GRADE FROM P.S.E. -- GEM 100 JUMBO.
With 1969 and 2010 P.F. certificates as a strip of three, this being the middle stamp. With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100 Jumbo; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $1,850.00 as 98). This is the highest grade possible and one of only three to achieve this grade. In addition, only one has been graded 100, which is an excellent indication of how rare this stamp is in such perfect condition.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS MASSIVE STAMP HAS ACHIEVED THE PERFECT GRADE OF GEM 100 FROM P.S.E., AND IS ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES IN EXISTENCE.
This stamp has beautiful color, huge margins and an attractive cancel. More than 350 are graded, and only five grade 100 and three grade 100J.
With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $3,500.00).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS EXTRAORDINARY STAMP HAS ACHIEVED THE EXALTED GRADE OF GEM 100 FROM P.S.E. AND RANKS AMONG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE STAMPS WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.
There are several Gem 100 or Gem 100 Jumbo Scott 7s that have been harvested from strips, sacrificing the adjoining stamps to create the desired margins. What makes this stamp so remarkable is that it comes from Position 10R2, the corner of the plate, and it was not "created" from a strip. The top and right margins are from the corner of the sheet, where there are no adjoining stamps. It shows small parts of the adjoining positions, 9R at left and 20R below. For many collectors, the appearance of this stamp, with its huge balanced "white" margins, face-free cancel and brilliant color, will be more aesthetically pleasing than the appearance of the 100 Jumbo stamps with surrounding positions on all sides.
Ex "European Connoisseur". With 2015 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $3,500.00). The P.S.E. Population Reports lists three Gem 100J and four other Gem 100 used stamps for Scott 7.

Almost 350 are graded, and only five are graded 100 and three are graded 100J.
With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $4,000.00). Only three have graded higher and four others share this grade.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT TYPE II 1851 ISSUE.
With 1983 S.P.A. and 2003 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100; SMQ $4,000.00). Frankly, today's P.S.E. graders would probably knock this down to 98J (SMQ $3,000.00).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS PHENOMENAL STAMP HAS ACHIEVED THE PERFECT GRADE OF GEM 100 FROM P.S.E. ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE ONE-CENT TYPE II 1851 ISSUE IN EXISTENCE.
This example will appeal to the most fastidious collector looking for huge margins, an attractive cancel and overall brilliance.
With 2011 P.F. and 2013 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100; SMQ $4,000.00). The P.S.E. Population Report lists two Gem 100J and five Gem 100 used stamps for Scott 7.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS EXTRAORDINARY STAMP HAS ACHIEVED THE EXALTED GRADE OF GEM 100 FROM P.S.E. AND RANKS AMONG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE STAMPS WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.
The Siegel firm has sold the lion's share of 1c 1851 Issue collections over the past several years, including the Wagshal collection (which contained the entire Neinken holding) and the Raymond Vogel collection. We have sold two of the three stamps graded Gem 100 Jumbo: one from Plate 1 Early and the other from Plate 2, each of which was cut from multiples to show adjoining stamps at the sides. The stamp offered here is the only Gem 100 we have offered among the four certified by P.S.E.
With 2015 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $4,200.00). The P.S.E. Population Reports lists two Gem 100J and four Gem 100 used stamps for Scott 7.

1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Plate 2, Jumbo margins all around including portions of adjoining stamps at top and bottom, radiant color on bright white paper, light blue face-free cancel leaves the vignette unobscured
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED JUMBO EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH A FACE-FREE BLUE CANCEL.
With 1986 P.F. and 2016 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $3,000.00). Only eight grade higher.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS STAMP--GRADED SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E.--IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE EXTANT OF THE IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE II FROM THE TOP ROW OF PLATE 4. A PHENOMENAL STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT--THE MARGINS ARE HUGE ALL AROUND, THE COLOR AND IMPRESSION ARE INTENSE, THE CANCELLATION IS CLEAR AND THE PAPER IS FRESH.
The top row of Plate 4 produced Type II stamps with the complete design at top. These distinctive positions are highly regarded by specialists and described as "rare" and "beautiful" in Neinken (pp. 269-270).
As an amusing anecdote, this stamp was acquired by Jerry Wagshal from a Christie's sale in the mid-1980s. It was cut from a strip on cover before it was offered in the Christie's sale as a single. After buying the stamp for a record price of nearly $3,000, Mr. Wagshal asked if he could have the cover. It was given to him with a note expressing hope that the price he paid was not indicative of the cover's corner card--the Lunatic Asylum of Dayton (the cover still accompanies).
Ex Wagshal and Merlin. With 2010 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; unpriced in SMQ from Plate 4)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED JUMBO EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II.
With 2020 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $3,000.00).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN OUTSTANDING JUMBO USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT BLUE FROM PLATE 2.
Ex Vogel. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $3,000.00). With 2011 P.F. certificate (Superb 98).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED JUMBO EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE FROM THE SCARCER PLATE 3.
With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $3,000.00). SMQ does not differentiate Scott No. 7s between the more common Plates 1E and 2 and the scarcer Plates 3 and 4. Scott prices Plate 3 No. 7 at 2.5-times the value for Plates 1E and 2. This is the highest graded example and the only Superb 98 Jumbo we have ever offered from Plate 3.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED JUMBO EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH FACE-FREE BLUE CANCEL.
With 1986 P.F. and 2016 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $3,000.00)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS POSITION IS THE ONLY TYPE II STAMP ON PLATE ONE EARLY WITH THE DESIGN COMPLETE AT TOP. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF POSITION 10R1E IN EXISTENCE.
The legendary top row of the right pane of Plate One Early yields the only Type I stamp (Position 7), six Type Ib stamps (Positions 3-6 and 8-9) and three Type II stamps (Positions 1-2 and 10). These were the first positions entered onto the plate (Position 10, offered here, was the very first entered). All were originally entered as Type I positions showing the completed design using a transfer roll that was not used for any other positions. Positions 1 and 2 were poorly executed and erased. The original transfers of Positions 3-10 were kept, but small portions of the designs were burnished away at the bottoms of seven of the eight positions, turning six into Type Ib and one into Type II stamps. Only one escaped the burnishing tool, which gives us Type I (Position 7R1E). The remaining positions on the plate were entered using a transfer roll with the design incomplete at top. Only these few positions from the top row of the right pane of Plate One Early have the design complete at top, and Position 10R1E is the only Type II on this plate to display this characteristic.
Ex Geary. With 1998 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ does not price Position 10R1E separately and SMQ value for a normal No. 7 is irrelevant). Scott Retail for Position 10R1E is 16-times that of a normal No. 7

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT TYPE II 1851 ISSUE.
Ex Grunin and Vogel. With 2015 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $3,000.00).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED JUMBO EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH FACE-FREE BLUE CANCEL.
With 1986 P.F. and 2016 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $3,000.00)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II FROM PLATE ONE EARLY. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE VIVID RED CANCEL.
With 2001 P.F. and 2003 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $1,850.00 as 98, unpriced in higher grades). The P.S.E. Population Report does not break down the 1c 1851's by plate. We are quite sure that the more desirable and scarcer Plate 1E stamps are much rarer in high grades than their Type II counterparts from other plates.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II FROM PLATE ONE EARLY. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE VIVID RED CANCEL.
With 2001 P.F. and 2003 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $1,900.00 as 98, unpriced in higher grades). The P.S.E. Population Report does not break down the 1c 1851's by plate. We are quite sure that the more desirable and scarcer Plate 1E stamps are much rarer in high grades than their Type II counterparts from other plates.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A TRULY OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT BLUE FROM PLATE TWO.
With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $2,450.00 as 98, unpriced in higher grade). According to the P.S.E. Population Report there have been 172 No. 7's submitted for grading, and this is one of only six to have achieved this impressive grade with only two higher

Eight Scott No. 7's (1c Type II imperforate) have achieved the P.S.E. grade of Superb 98 or better, but the P.S.E. Population Report does not break down the 1c 1851's by plate. We are quite sure that the more desirable and scarcer Plate 1E stamps are much rarer in high grades than their Type II counterparts from other plates.

In addition to the three inverted transfer positions, there are eight major double transfer positions on Plate 1 Early: 24L, 25L, 27L, 61L, 12R, 15R, 22R and 65R.
With 2010 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98; SMQ $1,850.00). The P.S.E. Population Report does not break down the 1c 1851's by plate. We are quite sure that the more desirable and scarcer Plate 1E stamps are much rarer in high grades than their Type II counterparts from Plate 2.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE II WITH THE PLATE NUMBER FROM PLATE 2.
Collectors who want the finest or most unusual examples of the classic imperforate issues are often stymied by common stamps, such as Scott No. 7, because it is difficult to find one example that stands apart from the rest. One way is to find a copy showing parts of all surrounding stamps, which is usually "made" by cutting out a single from a large multiple. Another approach, which is more difficult, is to find the stamp from either a corner-margin position or with part of the imprint or plate number.
The rarity of sound, four-margin copies increases exponentially when restricted to corner-margin or imprint examples. Imprints are found along eight positions on the 1c 1851-57 plates (four at left and four at right), and there are four corners of the full plate of 200 (plus the interior gutter positions). Many stamps from those positions were trimmed close to the design. The plate number is found on only two positions, and the number is almost never encountered on surviving stamps.
