Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

This information is provided for hobbyists and is not intended to represent philatelic material as an investment or financial instrument. Past performance is neither an indication nor guarantee of future performance. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information, but Siegel Auction Galleries (including its representatives and affiliates) is not liable for errors or omissions of any kind. EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS MASSIVE STAMP HAS ACHIEVED THE PERFECT GRADE OF GEM 100 FROM P.S.E., AND IS ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES IN EXISTENCE.

This stamp has beautiful color, huge margins and an attractive cancel. Almost 350 are graded, and only five are graded 100 and three are graded 100J.

With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $4,000.00). Only three have graded higher and four others share this grade.

With 1983 S.P.A. and 2003 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100; SMQ $4,000.00). Frankly, today's P.S.E. graders would probably knock this down to 98J (SMQ $3,000.00).

Sale Number 1115, Lot Number 2057, 1c 1851-56 Issue (Scott 6-8)1c Blue, Ty. II (7), 1c Blue, Ty. II (7)1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Position 10R2 from the upper right corner of Plate 2, huge balanced margins all around including a sizable portion of the corner sheet margins and parts of adjoining stamps to the left and below, cancelled by light face-free strike of "Paid" in small grid in circle -- not the usual Boston cancel, but with space between bars and circle -- wonderful bright shade and proof-like impression

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS EXTRAORDINARY STAMP HAS ACHIEVED THE EXALTED GRADE OF GEM 100 FROM P.S.E. AND RANKS AMONG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE STAMPS WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.

The Siegel firm has sold the lion's share of 1c 1851 Issue collections over the past several years, including the Wagshal collection (which contained the entire Neinken holding) and the Raymond Vogel collection. We have sold two of the three stamps graded Gem 100 Jumbo: one from Plate 1 Early and the other from Plate 2, each of which was cut from multiples to show adjoining stamps at the sides. The stamp offered here is the only Gem 100 we have offered among the four certified by P.S.E. What makes this stamp so remarkable is that it comes from Position 10R2, the corner of the plate, and it was not "created" from a strip. The top and right margins are from the corner of the sheet, where there are no adjoining stamps. It shows small parts of the adjoining positions, 9R at left and 20R below. For many collectors, the appearance of this stamp, with its huge balanced "white" margins, face-free cancel and brilliant color, will be more aesthetically pleasing than the appearance of the 100 Jumbo stamps with surrounding positions on all sides.

With 2015 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $4,200.00). The P.S.E. Population Reports lists two Gem 100J and four Gem 100 used stamps for Scott 7.

Position 10R1E, top right corner of right pane of Plate One Early, huge margins all around including top right corner sheet margins and parts of adjoining stamps at left and bottom, beautiful bright Plate One Early color, neat blue Charleston S.C. datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS POSITION IS THE ONLY TYPE II STAMP ON PLATE ONE EARLY WITH THE DESIGN COMPLETE AT TOP. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF POSITION 10R1E IN EXISTENCE.

The legendary top row of the right pane of Plate One Early yields the only Type I stamp (Position 7), six Type Ib stamps (Positions 3-6 and 8-9) and three Type II stamps (Positions 1-2 and 10). These were the first positions entered onto the plate (Position 10, offered here, was the very first entered). All were originally entered as Type I positions showing the completed design using a transfer roll that was not used for any other positions. Positions 1 and 2 were poorly executed and erased. The original transfers of Positions 3-10 were kept, but small portions of the designs were burnished away at the bottoms of seven of the eight positions, turning six into Type Ib and one into Type II stamps. Only one escaped the burnishing tool, which gives us Type I (Position 7R1E). The remaining positions on the plate were entered using a transfer roll with the design incomplete at top. Only these few positions from the top row of the right pane of Plate One Early have the design complete at top, and Position 10R1E is the only Type II on this plate to display this characteristic.

Ex Geary. With 1998 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ does not price Position 10R1E separately and SMQ value for a normal No. 7 is irrelevant). Scott Retail for Position 10R1E is 16-times that of a normal No. 7

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE II WITH THE PLATE NUMBER FROM PLATE 2.

Collectors who want the finest or most unusual examples of the classic imperforate issues are often stymied by common stamps, such as Scott No. 7, because it is difficult to find one example that stands apart from the rest. One way is to find a copy showing parts of all surrounding stamps, which is usually "made" by cutting out a single from a large multiple. Another approach, which is more difficult, is to find the stamp from either a corner-margin position or with part of the imprint or plate number.

The rarity of sound, four-margin copies increases exponentially when restricted to corner-margin or imprint examples. Imprints are found along eight positions on the 1c 1851-57 plates (four at left and four at right), and there are four corners of the full plate of 200 (plus the interior gutter positions). Many stamps from those positions were trimmed close to the design. The plate number is found on only two positions, and the number is almost never encountered on surviving stamps.

Ex Col. Edward H. R. Green. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate
