Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale 961, Lot 41, 1861-66 Issue5c Brown Yellow (67a). Fresh color in an unusually bright shade, choice centering with perforations clear of design on all sides, neat strike of red town circular datestamp at right leaves design clearly visible

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1861 ISSUE IN THE BROWN YELLOW COLOR.

Due to narrow spacing on the 5c plate, it is very difficult to find centered copies with the perforations clear of the design on all sides. The stamp offered here, with choice centering and the red town cancellation, should be considered a condition rarity.

With 2002 P.F. certificate. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $8,650.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and only one other shares this grade.
