Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

This information is provided for hobbyists and is not intended to represent philatelic material as an investment or financial instrument. Sale 1231, Lot 11, 1851-56 Issue (Scott 5-17)1c Blue, Ty. Ia (6). Position 99R4, huge margins all around, deep rich Plate 4 shade and proof-like impression, barely cancelled by a very light strike of circular datestamp, the margins and the cancel combining to beautifully highlight the type characteristics

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia. A BEAUTIFUL STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- ONE OF ONLY TWO AT THIS GRADE -- WHICH IS THE HIGHEST AWARDED.

Stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued in April, May and briefly in June 1857 before perforations were introduced. The relatively small number of imperforate Plate 4 stamps issued during this period explains the rarity and desirability of any of the imperforate stamp types produced from this plate (Ia, Ic, II, III and IIIa). The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic).

Ex Neinken and Wagshal. The 1925 Kelleher sale of the Dr. Carroll Chase collection featured a Type Ia described as "black town canc. is so light that stamp appears unused" (lot 368), which seems to describe this stamp, but since there were no photographs in the sale catalogue, we cannot be sure if this the ex-Chase stamp.

With 2010 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $96,000.00). This is one of only two Scott 6 stamps at this lofty grade, with none higher. Below these two there are four graded 95. The highest grade for an unused example is 85.

Sale 967, Lot 4081, 1851-56 Issue (Scott 5-17)1c Blue, Ty. Ia (6). Position 99L4, large even margins all around which go well beyond the bottom plumes, face-free cancel leaves the entire design clearly visible, deep rich color and proof-like impression on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia. THIS RARE AND REMARKABLE CLASSIC STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $49,900.00). This is the only example to achieve this grade to date and only one has graded higher.

EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia WITH A LIGHT CANCEL AND MARGINS THAT ALLOW THE FULL TYPE CHARACTERISITICS TO BE SEEN.

Ex Stephen Brown and Kirke. With 2010 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90 Jumbo; SMQ $30,000.00). Since 2008 the P.S.E. has changed its standards for Jumbo, so we expect this to be recertified as XF 90 and is offered as such (SMQ $24,000.00) -- P.S.E. Population Report for 90 is 6 plus 2 90J (including this stamp) and 6 higher, all used (highest grade for unused is 85)

EXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLE EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE Ia, ONE OF THE RARITIES FURNISHED BY PLATE FOUR, WITH CORNER SHEET MARGINS.

Ex Eno, Dauer and Merlin. "W.H.C." backstamp (Warren H. Colson). With 1992 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90 Jumbo; SMQ $33,000.00). Only five have graded higher (three at 95 and two at 98) and only one other shares this grade, but this corner-margin stamp is arguably superior to most of those with equal or higher numerical grades.
