Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale Number 1202, Lot Number 2607, 1916-18 Perf 10 Horizontal Rotary Press Coils, Unwatermarked (Scott 490-497)2c Carmine, Ty. II, Coil (491), 2c Carmine, Ty. II, Coil (491)2c Carmine, Ty. II, Coil (491). Pair, brilliant color, choice centering, bold New York duplex cancel, at one time certified as having light creases but we detect only some light natural paper bends (see below for discussion), a few minor perf separations at top

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE USED PAIR OF THE 2-CENT ROTARY TYPE II COIL, SCOTT 491, GRADED XF 90 BY P.S.E. -- THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED.

This pair was once part of a strip of three, which had a 1999 P.F. certificate (no. 338033, no longer accompanies) stating the two stamps in this pair have light creases. After separation from the third stamp (at left) this was resubmitted to both the P.F. and P.S.E. and received certificates as sound.

Ex Curtis. With 2015 P.F. and P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $9,750.00). This is the highest grade awarded to a used pair of Scott 491 and it is shared by only one other

Sale Number 1108, Lot Number 176, 1912-22 Issues, Cont. (Scott 491-544)2c Carmine, Ty. II, Coil (491), 2c Carmine, Ty. II, Coil (491)2c Carmine, Ty. II, Coil (491). Pair, unusually choice centering for this difficult issue, brilliant color, neat 1917 circular datestamp and oval registry cancels

EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB USED PAIR OF THE 1916 TYPE II ROTARY PRESS HORIZONTAL COIL, SCOTT 491, IN THE FINEST CONDITION ATTAINABLE.

Unlike many other issues, the horizontal coil is actually scarcer than the vertical coil. It was in production for only a short period of time before being replaced by the Type III, Scott 492.

With 2000 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $6,000.00). This is the highest graded awarded and no others share it. A Power Search review at our website shows how rare this is with decent centering.
