Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale Number 1062, Lot Number 537, 1904-07 Commemoratives, 1908-10 Washington-Franklin Issues (Scott 326-356)10c Yellow, Coil (356), 10c Yellow, Coil (356)10c Yellow, Coil (356). Mint N.H. pair, wide margins and essentially perfect centering, intense color

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED PAIR OF THE 10-CENT PERF 12 COIL, SCOTT 356, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. THIS IS BY FAR THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO ANY MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THIS COIL.

According to Johl (Volume 1, page 181), only 10,000 of the 10c Washington coil stamp were issued. They were made especially for a New York firm to send out advertising samples, similar to the 3c Orangeburg coil. Only a few rolls were sold to the firm, and the remaining rolls were distributed to some of the large post offices across the country. Dealers acquired several rolls, but because most contemporary collectors did not collect coils, many were used and destroyed.

Our computerized records encompass more than 18 years of auctions. In that time we have offered in Mint N.H. condition only a handful of singles, four guide line pairs (including the line pair offered in the previous lot) and three pairs.

Ex Whitman. With 1996 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $25,000.00). This is the only Mint N.H. example of Scott 356 in any format to achieve the grade of XF-Superb 95. The next closest Mint N.H. pair is graded 80

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED PAIR OF THE 10-CENT HORIZONTAL COIL, SCOTT 356, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

Our computerized records encompass fourteen years of auctions. In that time we have offered in Mint N.H. condition only four singles, three guide line pairs (including the single and line pair offered in this sale) and three pairs.

With 1996 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $35,000.00). This is the only Mint N.H. example of Scott 356 in any format to achieve the grade of XF-Superb 95. A Mint N.H. pair has been graded 80, and two pairs and one single in OGph condition have been graded 95.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED PAIR OF THE 10-CENT PERF 12 COIL, SCOTT 356.

With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (VF 80; SMQ $14,500.00). Only one Mint N.H. pair of Scott 356 grades higher -- the 95 offered in our Whitman and "Golden Oak" sales. This VF 80 graded pair is the next highest and is the only example in this grade.

Sale Number 932, Lot Number 37, 1908-10 Coil Issue (Scott 348 to 356)10c Yellow, Coil (356), 10c Yellow, Coil (356)10c Yellow, Coil (356). Mint N.H. pair, vibrant color on crisp paper, choice centering for this difficult issue

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED PAIR OF THE 10-CENT PERF 12 HORIZONTAL COIL, SCOTT 356. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO OBTAIN IN MINT NEVER-HINGED CONDITION. A MAJOR CONDITION RARITY.

As the previous description notes, very few examples of this coil issue were saved for collectors. A review of our computerized records revealed an astonishing fact: this is the first Mint N.H. pair we have offered since keeping computerized records. Our computerized records encompass almost 13 years of auctions. In that time we have offered in Mint N.H. condition the following examples of Scott No. 356: 1) Mint N.H. guide line strip of four (Zoellner Sale 804, lot 560, realized $35,000 hammer); 2) One Mint N.H. single offered twice (once in Sale 848 and once in Sale 913); and 3) One Mint N.H. guide line pair, ex Silver Lake (Sale 866, lot 206, realized $47,500 hammer).

With 1975 and 2000 P.F. certificates
