Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

This information is provided for hobbyists and is not intended to represent philatelic material as an investment or financial instrument. Past performance is neither an indication nor guarantee of future performance. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information, but Siegel Auction Galleries (including its representatives and affiliates) is not liable for errors or omissions of any kind. Sale Number 1205, Lot Number 2078, 1908-15 Issues50c Orange (310), 50c Orange (310)50c Orange (310). Mint N.H., absolutely perfect centering within very wide margins, striking vibrant color and proof-like impression

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A TRULY SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 50-CENT 1902 ISSUE, GRADED SUPERB 98 -- THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO ANY MINT NEVER-HINGED SCOTT 310 BY PROFESSIONAL STAMP EXPERTS.

Anyone who has been building a gem, never-hinged set of the 1902 Issue will immediately recognize the rarity of the 50c value in such superlative quality. It is one of the most challenging of the series to find both never-hinged and with perfect centering. This is confirmed by the fact that out of 53 never-hinged examples of Scott No. 310 submitted to P.S.E. for grading, only this example achieved the lofty grade of Superb 98. Quite likely this is the finest never-hinged example in existence.

With 1998 P.F., 2010 P.S.E. and 2014 P.S.A.G. certificates (latter two grading Superb 98; SMQ $23,500.00)

Sale Number 1150, Lot Number 953, 1902-08 Perforated Issues (Scott 300-313)50c Orange (310), 50c Orange (310)50c Orange (310). Mint N.H., rich color and proof-like impression, unusually choice centering with Jumbo margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 50-CENT 1902 ISSUE. THIS MARVELOUS STAMP IS GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY P.S.E. -- ONLY ONE HAS GRADED HIGHER (AT 98) AND ONE OTHER SHARES THIS DESIRABLE GRADE.

The 1902-03 Regular Issue was a great improvement over the Bureau's first efforts in 1894 and 1895. Perforations tend to be cleaner, and centering better, but the large plate layout and perforation method still resulted in a large number of poorly centered stamps. Furthermore, stamps issued in choice condition seldom stayed that way, because the boom in stamp collecting that began with the Roosevelt administration caused hordes of hinge-bearing philatelists to mount stamps over and over again. For this reason, today's collectors have grown accustomed to paying many multiples of Scott value for Extremely Fine stamps in Mint Never-Hinged state. Anyone who has pursued this set can testify that the 50c is rarely encountered in such condition. The 50c 1902 offered here probably ranks among the ten highest-quality examples in existence.

With 2008 P.S.E. certificate and also encapsulated (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $12,000.00). This is one of only two graded 95J with only one higher (at 98)
