Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

This information is provided for hobbyists and is not intended to represent philatelic material as an investment or financial instrument. Sale 1245, Lot 1106, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-30A)5c Red Brown (28). Perfect centering with unusually wide and balanced margins, beautiful warm shade on bright paper, neat 1859 circular datestamp cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT RED BROWN, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND IT IS SHARED BY ONLY ONE OTHER. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO OBTAIN WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS AND IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION.

Due to the narrow spacing between stamps on the 5c Plate 1, the perforations often touch or go into the outer portion of the design on one or more sides. The example offered here, with perfect centering and deep rich color, is a true condition rarity.

With 1983 P.F. and 2004 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98; SMQ $27,500.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only one other. This statistic has not changed since 2010.

Sale 1219, Lot 113, 5c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 27-30A)5c Red Brown (28). Near perfect centering with balanced margins, beautiful warm shade wonderfully complemented by red New York exchange office and ultramarine French entry datestamps

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E., THIS STAMP COMBINES THE THREE C's -- CENTERING, COLOR AND CANCEL -- IN A WAY THAT FEW OTHER 5-CENT 1857 ISSUES IN ANY SHADE COULD MATCH.

Due to the narrow spacing between stamps on the 5c plate, the perforations often touch or go into the outer portion of the design on one or more sides. The example offered here, with choice centering, deep rich color and both red and ultramarine cancels, is a true condition rarity.

With 2004 and 2011 P.F. certificates. With 2006 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $9,850.00 for normal cancel). The P.S.E. Population Report records seven stamps at the highest grades for Scott No. 28. There are five graded 95 and two graded 98. We have offered two of the other 95s and one of the 98s and all have black cancels. While not the highest graded stamp of the issue, one would be hard pressed to improve upon this Gem when considering the cancels

Sale 1166, Lot 639, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)5c Red Brown (28). Lovely shade on bright paper, remarkably choice centering with intact perfs at top and bottom which show the outer projections of both adjoining stamps, face-free strike of circular datestamp leaves design clearly visible

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A PHENOMENAL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT RED BROWN. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO OBTAIN WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS AND IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION. EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.

Due to the narrow spacing between stamps on the plate, the perforations often touch or go into the outer portion of the design on one or more sides. The intact perforations at top and bottom beautifully demonstrate this lack of spacing. The example offered here, with perfect centering and unusually wide margins, is a true condition rarity.

With 2017 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $9,850.00). Only two have graded higher (both 98, one of which brought $17,000 hammer in our 2012 Kirke sale). Only four others share this grade, and we have offered only one of them in our past sales

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT RED BROWN. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO OBTAIN WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS AND IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION.
