Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale 1032, Lot 3066, 1c-3c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-26A)3c Brownish Carmine, Ty. I (25). Exceptional centering with perfs almost completely clear of framelines on all sides, deep rich color on fresh paper, beautifully complemented by light strike of blue town datestamp cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 PERFORATED 3-CENT TYPE I WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED.

With 2010 P.F. and 2002 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98; SMQ $4,750.00 for Rose shade). As an indication of the difficulty of finding this issue with centering and margins that qualify as truly Superb, it has been a full ten years since this stamp was graded by P.S.E. and not a single additional example has achieved a 98, which remains the highest grade awarded
