Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale 1219, Lot 343, 1870-71 National Bank Note Co. Grilled Issue (Scott 134-144)90c Carmine, H. Grill (144). Rich color, unusually wide and balanced margins, clearly discernible grill points at top, cork cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE 90-CENT 1870 NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE. AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS AND IN SOUND CONDITION. THIS REMARKABLE STAMP IS GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST AWARDED.

For some reason, most examples of this issue with wide margins tend to have small flaws. We have encountered perhaps a dozen copies which are sound and also have wide margins. The example offered here is easily one of the finest.

Ex "Tahoe" and Merlin. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $18,500.00). This is the only example to achieve this lofty grade, which is the highest awarded. The next highest is 90J (one).

THIS REMARKABLE STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST AWARDED.

For no apparent reason, most examples of this issue with wide margins tend to have small flaws. We have encountered perhaps a dozen copies which are sound and also have wide margins. The example offered here is easily one of the finest.

Ex Tahoe. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $12,100.00 as 95, unpriced as 98). This is the only example to achieve this lofty grade, which is the highest awarded. The next-highest is 90J (one) followed by 90 (one).

Sale 1062, Lot 359, 1870-71 National Bank Note Co. Grilled Issue (Scott 134-144)90c Carmine, H. Grill (144). Extraordinarily wide margins and choice centering, rich color, vivid red cork cancel, several clearly discernible grill points

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST 1870 90-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE STAMPS IN EXISTENCE. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN WITH COLORED CANCELS.

Ex Braus, Klein, Dr. Morris and Mayer. With 1959, 1991 and 1994 P.F. certificates. With 2007 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90 Jumbo; SMQ $4,700.00 as 90, $12,100.00 as 95 with a normal cancel). This is the sole example graded 90J in the P.S.E. Population Report. There is one stamp graded 95J, with a black cork cancel, ex Tahoe and most recently offered in our 2012 sale of the Merlin collection. While this stamp does not equal the ex Merlin stamp's numerical grade, this is by far the most attractively cancelled of the few high-grade Scott 144 stamps.

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 90-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY H GRILL.

Rich color on bright paper, few noticeable grill points, cork cancel, wide margins, natural paper inclusion at bottom right, Very Fine and choice -- we would have given this an Extremely Fine grade if not for the VF 80 certificate -- with 2007 P.S.E. certificate (VF 80; SMQ $2,500.00)

Sale 1090, Lot 1306, 1870-71 National Bank Note Co. Issues (Scott 134-155)90c Carmine, H. Grill (144). Rich color, choice centering with wide margins, few grill points visible at right, cork cancel, accompanying 2014 P.S.E. certificate states "two short perfs" but the perfs are typically choppy on this issue and such irregular perf tooth length would never have been characterized as "short" in the past (which we long for), still Very Fine and a great stamp, with 1992 P.F. and 2014 P.S.E. certificates (VF 80; SMQ $2,500.00)
