Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale Number 1159, Lot Number 161, 1870-71 National Bank Note Co. Issues (Scott 134-155)2c Red Brown, I. Grill (135A), 2c Red Brown, I. Grill (135A)2c Red Brown, I. Grill (135A). Original gum, lightly hinged, almost perfectly centered, magnificent color with proof-like impression

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 2-CENT I GRILL. RARE IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION.

With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (OGph, XF 90; SMQ $5,750.00). This stamp was graded before the Scott Catalog began its major number listings for the I Grills. We suspect that is the reason P.S.E. does not list this XF 90 in its Population Report, where the highest grade listed is 85J. By way of comparison the P.F. database lists only one at XF 90, with none higher

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A SCARCE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 2-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE WITH I GRILL. THIS HAS RECENTLY BEEN ELEVATED TO A MAJOR CATALOGUE NUMBER IN SCOTT.

The I Grills have been elevated to major catalogue numbers starting with the 2013 Scott Specialized Catalogue, taking their place with the other grill types such as the A, B, C, D, Z, E and F Grills.

With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (OGh, VF 80; unlisted in SMQ as an I Grill, though we expect they will start listing them soon).
