Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale 978, Lot 1011, 1851-56 Issue3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A). Mint N.H., enormous margins all around incl. significant parts of adjoining stamps at top and bottom and sheet margin at left, brilliant color

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS STUNNING MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 3-CENT DULL RED TYPE II HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE.

The 3c 1851 is a common stamp, but as one goes up the grading scale, original-gum examples awarded 95 or better are increasingly scarce. Factoring in Mint Never-Hinged original gum, the rarity of high-grade examples increases exponentially. This Mint N.H. stamp with the coveted Superb 98 Jumbo P.S.E. grade ranks alongside the rarest of classic imperforate issues.

P.S.E. encapsulated before the recent changes in change in Scott Catalogue numbers as No. 11 (Superb 98 Jumbo; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $2,550.00 as 98). This and one other -- offered in our recent Whitman sale -- have achieved this grade, which is the highest awarded to date in either hinged or Mint N.H. condition. With the reclassification of this stamp, there are no examples of Scott No. 11 in either hinged or Mint N.H. condition to achieve this grade.

A review using Power Search found only two others of this type in Mint N.H. condition. The last to be offered was in 2005, which was cut in at bottom, and the one before that was sold in 2004. This Mint N.H. stamp with the coveted Superb 98 Jumbo P.S.E. grade ranks alongside the rarest of classic imperforate issues.

With 1996 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo). This is the highest grade awarded to date. Only one Mint N.H. Scott 11 has achieved the same grade. Scott Retail as hinged
