Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale Number 1166, Lot Number 718, 1875 Re-Issue of 1861-66 Issue (Scott 102-111)5c Brown, Re-Issue (105), 5c Brown, Re-Issue (105)5c Brown, Re-Issue (105). Original gum, deep rich color, perfect centering with Jumbo margins on post-office fresh paper, dealer's small backstamp

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS DESIRABLE GRADE.

The 5c Re-Issue was printed from a new plate of 100 subjects, compared to the original plate of 200 in two panes. The Re-Issue plate can be identified by a notch at bottom. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). Only 672 of the 5c were sold; the remaining 9,328 were destroyed on July 16, 1884.

With 2001 and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (OG, XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $13,000.00). This stamp was graded before P.S.E. started breaking out OGph vs. OGh. While the gum is intact and quite typical for the 1861 Re-Issues, we feel it would be graded OGh, XF-Superb 95 Jumbo if submitted today. This is the highest graded example in the P.S.E. Population Report and no others share this grade
