Three things to keep in mind when looking at the above results (unsolds are not included):

  1. It is important to look at the individual data points listed below. Price swings up may be due to varieties such as broken hat or other positives such as cancels. Price swings down may be due to factors such as faults on items that would have graded higher if they were sound, and may not be considered as desirable as a sound copy in this grade.
  2. When looking at multiple grades on the graph, grades with the same population numbers may show overlapping.
  3. At the time of an auction, the SMQ value has already been published and is available to bidders. Increases or decreases in SMQ value prior to the auction may affect the price realized.

Sale Number 1199, Lot Number 1174, 1875 Re-Issue of 1861-66 Issue (Scott 102-111)2c Black, Re-Issue (103), 2c Black, Re-Issue (103)2c Black, Re-Issue (103). Intense shade on bright paper, unobtrusive strike of New York duplex cancel, unusually choice centering for this difficult issue

EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK RE-ISSUE, GRADED XF 90 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED. ONLY 26 USED EXAMPLES ARE CONTAINED IN OUR CENSUS AND THE EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE IS UNQUESTIONABLY ONE OF THE FINEST.

The 2c Re-Issue was printed from a new plate of 100 subjects, compared to the original plate of 200 in two panes. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). Only 979 of the 2c were sold; the remaining 9,021 were destroyed on July 16, 1884. The 2c plate can be easily identified by a spot on the cheek.

Our census of Scott 103 used, available at our website at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/103 , records 26 examples. It is known with a variety of cancels. However, of these only five or six have centering we would consider Very Fine, and perhaps a couple others could be considered Extremely Fine. Several of the possibly sound examples have not been examined in decades and may in fact not be sound. The example offered here, with wide balanced margins and a relatively light cancel, is a true condition rarity and clearly among the very finest examples known.

Census No. 103-CAN-22. Ex Merlin. With 2005 P.F. and 2011 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $50,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded and only two others shares this grade.

Beautifully centered with balanced margins at sides and wide margins at top and bottom, sharp proof-like impression, bold strike of blue target cancel, in two prior sales we have noted "insignificant corner crease at bottom right is not even visible in fluid and can only be seen for a split second when the fluid dries", we can find no trace of the crease now and the accompanying P.S.E. certificate does not note a crease

EXTREMELY FINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK RE-ISSUE GRADED XF 90 BY P.S.E. THIS IS THE HIGEST GRADED AWARDED. ONLY 23 USED COPIES ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.

The 2c Re-Issue was printed from a new plate of 100 subjects, compared to the original plate of 200 in two panes. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). Only 979 of the 2c were sold; the remaining 9,021 were destroyed on July 16, 1884. The 2c plate can be easily identified by a spot on the cheek (see illustration).

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL SOUND AND CENTERED USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK RE-ISSUE. ONLY 23 USED EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.

The 2c Re-Issue was printed from a new plate of 100 subjects, compared to the original plate of 200 in two panes. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). Our census of Scott 103 used, available at our website at http://siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/103/103.pdf , records 23 examples. It is known with a variety of cancels. Approximately half are sound. The stamp offered here, with a well-struck contemporary cancel, is arguably the finest example known. EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK RE-ISSUE HAS BEEN GRADED XF 90 BY P.S.E, WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE. ONLY 24 USED EXAMPLES ARE CONTAINED IN OUR CENSUS AND THE EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE IS UNQUESTIONABLY ONE OF THE FINEST EXTANT.

Our unpublished census of Scott 103 used contains 24 copies, with approximately 13 that are sound. However, of these only five or six have centering we would consider Very Fine, and perhaps a couple others could be considered Extremely Fine, including the ex Zoellner copy and the blue target cancel copy which is ex Morris, Twigg-Smith and Tahoe (and has a small corner crease). Several of the possibly sound examples have not been examined in decades and may in fact not be sound. The example offered here, with wide balanced margins and a relatively light cancel, is a true condition rarity and arguably the finest example known. In fact, we believe the P.S.E. should have graded this stamp XF-Superb 95, but used 1861-66 Re-Issues are frequently penalized by the P.S.E. for having hallmark genuine duplex or oval cancellations.
