Sale 1287, Lot 1175, Syria (with Alaouites & Rouad)FRANCE, Used in Egypt, Alexandria, 1862, 10c Bister on Yellowish, 40c Orange on Yellowish (25, 27; Yvert 21, 23). Tied by dotted "5080" cancel with "Alexandrie, Egypte 27 ABRIL 64" double-circle datestamp below on cover originating in Aleppo, Syria, sent via the Russian Post Office in Alexandria with lightly struck blue Alexandria circular datestamp and "P.P." in ornate box handstamp, manuscript "voi d'Alexandrie" directive, blue "Joseph E. Hava, Alep, Syrie" oval company handstamp, red and black Marseilles arrival datestamps

VERY FINE AND EXTRAORDINARILY RARE RUSSIAN AND FRENCH COMBINATION POST OFFICES IN ALEXANDRIA COVER ORIGINATING IN SYRIA. WE ARE ONLY AWARE OF ONE OTHER SIMILARLY USED COVER.

The Russian post office in Alexandria, whether on mail to, from, or via this post office, is quite rare. Smith estimates there are in the region of 30 covers. A combination use with the French post office in Alexandria is just exceptional, not to mention a cover originating in Aleppo, Syria and carried on a ROPIT ship to Alexandria.

Signed Calves. With 2014 J-F Brun certificate.

VERY FINE. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE 1918 -1/2-PIASTRE ALEPPO PROVISIONAL ISSUE ON COVER TO BEIRUT AND RETURNED. EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST OF THE FOUR RECORDED COVERS.

Kaczmarczk & Unwin record a total of twelve examples of this provisional stamp, just four of which are still on covers. An exceptional rarity of the highest magnitude and a key item for any award winning exhibit of Syria. Especially desirable with censor markings from three different government authorities.
