VERY FINE AND RARE COVER FROM INDIA VIA THE DESERT SERVICE TO LONDON PRIOR TO OFFICIAL BRITISH POSTAL AGENCY.
Prior to the opening of official postal agency in Baghdad and Mosul, mail was carried across the Syrian desert to Constantinople for onwards transmission westward. This is an early cover as this service was not formalized to a monthly service until 1797. The sender notes "this letter goes by the Way of Bussora and the Viper. Hardie (presumably Captain of the Viper) sails this afternoon therefore you must excuse brevity."
