Sale 1280, Lot 415, French Post Office in Yokohama, continuedFRANCE, 1870, 80c Rose, Bordeaux Issue (48; Yvert 49). Three large margins to clear at bottom, tied by clearly struck "5118" dotted diamond cancel, mostly clear "Yokohama Bau Francais 31 Juil. 71" double-circle datestamp on folded letter on Guillaume Tell printed letterhead with Yokohama dateline and handstamped return address on front, to Alphandery & Toly, Avignon, France, red "PD" framed handstamp, Marseilles (Sep. 21) and Avignon (Sep. 22) backstamps

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE SINGLE 80-CENTIMES BORDEAUX ISSUE FRANKING FROM JAPAN TO FRANCE, PAYING THE RATE BY FRENCH PACKET.

The rate from Yokohama to France by French Packet was raised from 80c to 100c, effective August 1, 1871. For this reason, there was a brief period in which the Bordeaux Issue, which reached Japan in mid-1871, could be used to pay the 80c rate. Very few covers from Japan with the Bordeaux Issue are known (Matsumoto estimated 15 in his book, p. 68), and this single 80c franking is outstanding among them.

Large margins all around, used with 1867, 30c Brown (34; Yvert 30), both tied by boldly struck "5118" dotted diamond cancel (a second strike at upper right), clear "Yokohama Bau Francais 7 Aout 71" double-circle datestamp on folded letter on Guillaume Tell printed letterhead with Yokohama dateline and handstamped return address on front, to Alphandery & Toly, Avignon, France, red "PD" framed handstamp, red "Paq. Angl. V. Suez Amb. Mars. 29 Sept. 71" double-circle datestamp, Avignon (Sep. 29) backstamp

VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE MIXED-ISSUE FRANKING WITH THE 80-CENTIMES BORDEAUX ISSUE AND 30-CENTIMES "EMPIRE LAURE".

Effective August 1, 1871, one week before this cover was mailed at Yokohama, the rates to France were changed to 100c (one franc) by French Packet via Marseilles and 130c (1fr30c) by British Packet via Brindisi. The 110c franking on this cover represents an underpayment or overpayment at the time of mailing, and underpaid the obsolete 120c British Packet rate. It was accepted for the 130c rate.

Sale 1280, Lot 417, French Post Office in Yokohama, continuedFRANCE, 1870, 80c Rose, Bordeaux Issue (48; Yvert 49). Five singles with mostly large margins, used with 1868, 80c Rose (36; Yvert 32) and 1870, 40c Orange, Bordeaux Issue (47; Yvert 48), top torn into design when separated, all well-tied by multiple strikes of "5118" dotted diamond cancel, perfect clear strike of blue "Yokohama Bau Francais 4 Sept. 71" double-circle datestamp on European-size cover with Maron & Co. blue handstamp to Albert May, Paris, France, sender's directive "Via Brindisi", clear strikes of red "PD" framed handstamp and blue "Paq. An. V. Suez 3 Marseille 3 28 Oct. 71" circular datestamp, no backstamps

OVERALL A VERY FINE COVER WITH A TRULY ASTOUNDING MIXED-ISSUE FRANKING INCLUDING THE 40-CENTIMES AND FIVE 80-CENTIMES BORDEAUX ISSUE.

The single rate from Yokohama to France via Brindisi by British Packet was 130-centimes per 10g (effective August 1, 1871). The 5fr20c postage on this cover pays the quadruple rate. The blue October 28 entry datestamp confirms it was carried by British Packet ("Paq. An."). This is certainly one of the largest Bordeaux Issue frankings on a cover from Japan, if not the largest.

Sale 1280, Lot 418, French Post Office in Yokohama, continuedFRANCE, 1870, 40c Orange, Bordeaux Issue (47; Yvert 48). Roughly separated into design, used with two 1867, 20c Blue (33; Yvert 29), different shades, each with part of margin torn away, tied by "5118" dotted diamond cancel, partly readable "Yokohama Bau Francais 30 Sept. 71" double-circle datestamp on cover to Oscar Trefftz, Calcutta, India, sender's directive "by French Packet", red "PD" framed handstamp, backstamped Galle (Oct. 25), also on back are blue "Steamer Letter G.P.O. Calcutta No. 9 71" circular datestamp and "Steam Postage" crossed out, red "Steamer Letter G.P.O. Calcutta No. 9 71" in circle and red "Calcutta Delivery 10 Nov. 71 1st" oval datestamps, with original letter enclosures dated Sep. 18 and 30

AN ATTRACTIVE COVER WITH MARGINS AS SENDER CUT THEM--EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 40-CENTIMES BORDEAUX ISSUE FROM YOKOHAMA TO INDIA.

The 80-centimes franking paid the obsolete rate to France, which was raised on August 1, 1871. There is no evidence of missing/substituted stamps and no additional postage is marked due, so this was evidently accepted into the French and British postal systems and delivered to Calcutta as fully prepaid. French mail covers from Japan to India in this period are extremely rare, and this might be the only one with the Bordeaux Issue.

The 3fr60c franking may have been intended to pay the triple 120c rate from Japan to Italy by French Packet. It does not correspond to either of the two published rates for a "value declared" letter (2 francs or 2fr60c). Matsumoto reported this cover and one other (to France) as the only two registered covers (p. 109, where this cover is illustrated).

The pair of 80c stamps overpaid the single rate, but the letter was found to be over the 10-gram limit. It was rated 360-centimes as an unpaid double-rate letter and credited 160-centimes for the stamps, leaving 200-centimes (2 francs = 2 lire) postage due.
