Sale 1279, Lot 12, French MailsGREAT BRITAIN, 1864, 9p Bister (A18; SG Z16). Lettered L-C, tied by French anchor in dotted diamond cancel with "Uruguay Saintonge, 15 Sept. 64" French Packet octagonal double-circle datestamp on small blue cover to Devonport, England, manuscript "via Bordeaux" directive at top left, "FR/2F20" oval Anglo-French accountancy handstamp and rated "8"(p) due, Calais and London transit and Devonport receiving backstamps

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED FRENCH MAIL COVER WITH A BRITISH STAMP USED FROM URUGUAY PRIOR TO THE PERIOD WHEN BRITISH STAMPS WERE OFFICIALLY SUPPLIED. A REMARKABLE BRITISH POST OFFICES ABROAD USAGE.

Judging by the use, we presume the Great Britain 9p was accepted for postage, possibly in deference to the Anglo-French postal convention in place at the time. Great Britain stamps were not officially supplied to Uruguay until October 1864. According to Ken Gordon, while this is a unique use from Uruguay, there is a similar cover known from Buenos Aires, among other examples known within the Mediterranean area.

Ex "Dubois".

Sale 1279, Lot 13, French MailsFRANCE, 1862, 80c Rose (28; Yvert 24). Tied by clearly struck "Admon de Correos, Montevideo, 29 AGOSTO, 1864" oval datestamp on black-bordered mourning cover to Bordeaux, France, "GB/1F60C" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, "8" decimes due handstamp, British ship, London, and Paris transit datestamps, Bordeaux receiving backstamp, cover missing portion of backflap, Very Fine and handsome cover, an unusual use of the French 80c Napoleon in Montevideo, the sender probably intended this cover to go by French packet, but it missed the sailing and was sent by British packet, the British "C28" canceling device had not been received by this date and the Montevideo oval datestamp was used instead (similar to the cover offered in lot 8), signed A. Diena
