Sale 1287, Lot 1399, French, British, and Dutch OccupationsFrench Occupation "Samarang 10 St" Handstamp. Partly clear strike in red on mostly complete folded letter (missing section had the year date) to "De Heer F. von Wonze, Commissaris ordonnateur over geheele Eyland Java, Batavia", wear and splits along folds, small erosion spot in center of address panel

FINE STRIKE OF THIS RARE SAMARANG HANDSTAMP, USED DURING THE BRIEF PERIOD OF FRENCH OCCUPATION OF JAVA FROM 1808 TO 1811.

When France conquered Holland during the Napoleonic Wars, they took control of Dutch colonial possessions in the East Indies, but left the administration of the islands largely in the hands of local officials. This French occupation period letter has content and a signature we are incapable of reading, but the PDF provided on our website will be useful to those who wish to assign a year date -- in any case, only a few examples are known of this marking

Sale 1287, Lot 1401, French, British, and Dutch Occupations "JAVA GENERAL POST OFFICE/BA=/TAVIA/DOL=/LORS/STY=/VERS" Double-circle Handstamp (WdB 13). Exceptionally clear strike in red with manuscript "20 Kop" kopper rate (=4 stuivers) applied on arrival, part strike of red "VOC 10 St" in circle handstamp on folded letter datelined Samarang, Dec. 11, 1814 (?) to Batavia, slight ink erosion reinforced inside, Fine, the "VOC 10 St" prepayment marking was applied at Samarang, but the correct rate was 12 stuivers, so the 2s deficiency was doubled and exchanged to 20 koppers, as reflected in the Batavia double-circle marking, the combination of the VOC and British Occupation handstamp is remarkable and very rare
