Clear red strikes of "CERTIFICADO", "MONTVo", and "FRANCA" on folded cover with "#" cross-hatch patterns in corners indicating registration, addressed to Paysandu, manuscript "Sale el 23 de Novre" at bottom left, sender's name on reverse and signed by recipient on interior as receipt of delivery, light toned spots and horizontal file fold along bottom

VERY FINE AND RARE. A RARE EARLY DOMESTIC REGISTERED COVER FROM MONTEVIDEO TO PAYSANDU.

The Uruguay postal regulations required that delivered registered mail was signed and kept by the post office as receipt of delivery.

Sale 1279, Lot 2, Early Stampless PeriodURUGUAY, 1836 Cover from President Oribe to Fortress in Santa Teresa. Folded letter carried privately and datelined Montevideo Nov. 26, 1836, signed President Manuel Oribe, addressed to Juan Barrios, the Commander of the Santa Teresa Fortress located on the border with Brazil, letter requesting the commander to report everything that is happening in the neighboring territories, even if it does not seem important, Very Fine, an important piece of postal history when placed in the context of this tumultuous period of early Uruguayan independence, President Oribe was President between 1835 and 1838 when he was forced to resign by General Fructuoso Rivera, shortly thereafter beginning the Uruguayan Civil War

Sale 1279, Lot 3, Early Stampless PeriodURUGUAY, "Sala de Comercio de Montevideo" Oval Handstamp. Two folded letters to the same correspondence in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, each with the ornate "Sala de Comercio de Montevideo" oval handstamp, one dated 1857 in blue, other dated 1858 in black, latter additionally with red Montevideo oval datestamp, Very Fine strikes of this scarce marking, the "Sala de Comercio" handstamp was used on mail that went via the special postal facility of the Chamber of Commerce, it was restricted to merchant use after the normal post office had closed for the day, as a de facto semi-official private mail service with minimal post office involvement, the blue strike is ex "Concordia", both ex Moorhouse Estate, see lot 102 for a stamped cover with this marking
