Sale 1279, Lot 199, 1864 Escuditos IssueURUGUAY, 1864, 12c Black Die Proof (23P). Printed in black on thin wove paper measuring 26 x 58mm, exceptionally sharp impression, crease in top margin, shallow thin spots, and affected by toned spots, otherwise Fine, this is the only recorded proof of any classic Uruguayan stamp, all issues up thru the 1864 Escuditos Issue were printed by Mege & Willems of Montevideo before the printing contract was awarded to the American Bank Note Company, remarkably this is the only pre-production item available to collectors

Horizontal pair, large to ample margins (though expertly repaired right margin) and a single with full margins, pair with clear Montevideo Mar. 7, 1864 oval datestamp and single with Montevideo Mar. 9, 1864 oval datestamps, small flaws including light thins and overall soiling, Fine-Very Fine cancels, these represent the earliest recorded uses of the Escuditos Issue, over a month prior to the issue date on Apr. 13, 1864

Sale 1279, Lot 201, 1864 Escuditos IssueURUGUAY, 1864 Escuditos Issue with Montevideo "Mute Scarab" Cancel (18-23). Eight stamps and two covers neatly mounted on exhibit page all with clear "Mute Scarab" cancel of Montevideo, single of each issued denomination including 6c (3), 8c, 10c, and 12c (3), plus two folded covers from the same correspondence, one with 12c Blue and other with 6c Rose and 12c Blue, both addressed to Rosario, Argentina and dated April 1865, stamps with a few small flaws, mostly Very Fine, a rare assemblage of this cancel, which was used during a short period of time in April 1865, not much is known about these distinctive cancels as they did not serve any specific postal purpose, 6c/12c combination cover with 2004 Rocha certificate

Four singles, large balanced margins, used 1864, 6c Rose, Escuditos (18) described as the "Brick Red" shade (18c) on accompanying certificate though we disagree, large balanced margins, all tied by three strikes of "Admon de Correos, Montevideo, 9 MARZO, 1864" oval datestamp on cover front only to Buenos Aires, Argentina, sender's directive "per Caaguaza", Very Fine, this is the earliest recorded cover or front of the Escuditos Issue, over a month prior to the issue date on Apr. 13, 1864, with 2004 Rocha certificate

Huge balanced margins, tied by indistinct oval cancel on ca. 1866 cover to Rocha, sender's directive "Diligencia de Maldonado" and "Por via de Jose Arrarte" at bottom left, stamp with trace of light soiling, otherwise Very Fine and scarce use of this high value, the provisional surcharge issue was in use for just ten days from Jan. 1 to Jan. 10, 1866, therefore very few covers are known
