Sale 1278, Lot 3150, 1857-60 Issue and 1857 Reprint (Scott 18-47)1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Bottom row of Plate 4, unused (no gum), well-balanced margins revealing the key design characteristics at top and the all important plumes at bottom, rich color, completely sound

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE SOUND AND CENTERED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.

Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom. For this reason, stamps from the bottom row of Plate 4 with perforations clear of the design are especially desirable, since the characteristics of the type are complete (Type Ia) or nearly complete (Type Ic) at bottom. The stamp offered here is an extremely rare centered, sound unused example.

Ex Little. With 2015 P.F. certificate (VF 80).

VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.

Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom.

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE SOUND AND WELL-CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT 1857 TYPE Ic.

This stamp is far scarcer than its catalogue or SMQ values would suggest, especially with four margins in sound condition.

With 2022 plating certificate from the One Cent Franklin Plating Archive. With 2023 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85; SMQ $9,750.00). Only four used examples of Scott 19b have even been deemed worthy of P.S.E. grading by their owners. Apart from this VF-XF 85 grade, there exist single examples at 95, 80 and 70.
