POSTAGE/INLD. DO" handstamp with manuscript "8" and "2" rates inserted--carried by Koninklijke Pakketvaart Maatschappij packet to Singapore where Netherlands postal authorities affixed the postage due label

EXTREMELY FINE. THE NETHERLANDS INDIES POSTAGE DUE LABELS ARE EXCEEDINGLY RARE ON COVERS FROM COUNTRIES OTHER THAN THE NETHERLANDS--THIS LETTER FROM SWITZERLAND IS ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING "LANDMAILZEGEL" COVERS KNOWN, AND ITS SUPERB QUALITY ONLY HEIGHTENS ITS IMPORTANCE AND VALUE. WITHOUT QUESTION, THIS IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE MAGNOLIA NETHERLANDS INDIES COLLECTION.

Heinrich Zollinger was a Swiss botanist who traveled to Java in 1843. Based on the other letters from this correspondence, offered in lots1454-1456, Zollinger returned to Switzerland not long after receiving this letter, and brought his correspondence back to the more temperate climate of Europe. This circumstance explains the extraordinary quality of the letter offered here, which is free of the usual climate-induced condition issues that affect many of the Postage Due Label covers.

Sale 1287, Lot 1479, 1845-46 "Land Mail" Postage Due Labels, 1864 First IssueNETHERLANDS INDIES, 1846, "Duiten" Postage Due Label (J1; NVPH II). Type II, large to clear margins all around, manuscript "216" rate and "10 Oct. 1846" (Oct. 10, 1846) date, on folded letter from Rotterdam to Samarang, Java, in care of Maclaine Fraser & Co. in Singapore, sender's directive "pr Overland Mail via Marseilles", blue "Rotterdam 22/3 Franco" (Mar. 22, 1846) half-circle datestamp and "P.F." handstamp, manuscript rates on back, addressee's name cut out--the letter is a report in English of sales from Aug. 31 to Sep. 28 (1845) and the Mar. 22, 1846 despatch date fits with those dates, but the Oct. 10, 1846 label date is far too late unless this was held in Singapore, which seems unlikely--a genuine label, but the cover is offered "as is"
