VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF 12-CENT 1857 ISSUE ON AN INBOUND STEAMSHIP-RATED PATRIOTIC COVER FROM SOUTH AMERICA.
This cover is addressed to Mrs. Lucinda B. Trevitt, the wife of William Trevitt, a doctor, politician, diplomat, and newspaper publisher in 19th century Ohio. He served two terms as Ohio secretary of state, three years in the Ohio House of Representatives, was a surgeon in the Mexican War, and was a diplomat in South America. From 1857 to 1860, Trevitt was U.S. consul to Chile at Valparaiso. He was appointed U.S. consul to Peru at Callao by President James Buchanan on January 23, 1860, and sailed from the U.S. to Callao shortly thereafter. This cover arrived in New York City on a steamship entering port sometime in the first half of August 1861, and it was treated as a prepaid steamship letter. The standard rate was 10c, so this is apparently a double-rate letter overpaid 4c. It was forwarded from Columbus to Granville, and 6c (double 3c rate) was charged.
Ex Dick and Myers

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULAR 1857 ISSUE COVER, WITH TEN 12-CENT STAMPS MAKING UP THE SIX-TIMES 21-CENT RATE TO HONG KONG BY AMERICAN PACKET.
Ex "J & J" Collection.
VERY FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARY 1857 ISSUE FRANKING ON AN EXTREMELY RARE COVER TO NORWAY IN THE CLASSIC PERIOD.
The 46c rate to Norway by Prussian Closed Mail was effective from July 1856 to May 1863. Very few covers from the U.S. to Norway are known from the pre-UPU period. This cover was sent by a member of the Norwegian immigrant community in Illinois.
With 2005 P.F. certificate
VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND EXTREMELY RARE COVER TO SWEDEN WITH AN UNUSUAL 1857 ISSUE AND EMBOSSED STAMP COMBINATION TO PAY THE 42-CENT PRUSSIAN CLOSED MAIL RATE. THE KEY WEST ORIGIN ADDS TO THIS COVER'S REMARKABLE CHARACTER.
As evidenced by this cover, the Key West, Florida, post office used a distinctive circular datestamp with integral "Paid" struck in red, which closely resembles the red markings applied at the large foreign-mail exchange offices. We searched unsuccessfully for another example.
