VERY FINE AND UNIQUE USE OF THIS ROUTE AGENT'S MARKING ON TRANSATLANTIC MAIL WITH THE 1851 ISSUE.
U.S. contract waterway route 5032 was in operation from 1846 to 1858 on the Ohio River from Cincinnati to Louisville, Kentucky. After reaching New York, this cover was carried on the Collins Line's Arctic, departing March 5 and arriving Liverpool March 16. The 27c postage overpaid both the British and American Packet rates. The sender may have believed there was a rate comprising 3c to New York and 24c American packet rate to France.
