2c Brown, Varieties and Plate Positions (113). 11 used stamps and one cover, each showing an interesting variety or a plate flaw, including wild misperf with nearly even halves of two stamps, paper folds, underinking probably from an improperly moistened sheet, captured plate "No. 3" (ex Dr. Heimburger), two singles which were once a pair with captured top imprint, the stamp on cover also with a captured part imprint, a few others, a small flaw or two may be found but overall this is a Fine and fascinating group which took diligent searching to compile, two P.F. certificates accompany, see our website PDF for a complete scan

Rich color, unusually bold strike of "Hiogo, Japan" double-circle handstamp, slightly rounded corner at lower left not mentioned on accompanying certificate, Fine stamp and Very Fine strike of this cancel, which is scarce on the 2c 1869 Pictorial Issue, the U.S. Post Office opened in Hiogo in 1868, one year after those in Yokohama and Nagasaki, and was in operation until December 1874; the rate was 10c to the U.S., 3c or 6c between Treaty Ports and additional rates to Europe, some covers exist with large frankings of the 2c so this denomination must have been readily available in Hiogo; however, we have offered only about ten unduplicated off-cover examples since keeping computerized records and almost all are faulty or off-center, ex Hall and "Lake Shore", with 2006 P.F. certificate

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITH THE JEFFERSON OHIO PRINTED PRECANCEL -- THE ONLY PRINTED PRECANCEL KNOWN TO EXIST ON ANY 1869 ISSUE STAMP.
The Jefferson Ohio precancels were made by J. A. Howells & Co., job printers and dealers in stationery and blank forms based in Jefferson. The precancels were printed onto stamps already affixed to an envelope, using a typeset form, which at the same time printed a frame for the stamp (one line of which appears in the left perfs of this example) and other elements of the address and advertising corner card. Different versions of the precancel are known on the 1863 2c Black Jack and on the 1870 1c Bank Note issue. Three examples of the 2c 1869 Pictorial are recorded with this precancel, including one on a J. A. Howells & Co. cover and one other off-cover which is faulty. Both of these other examples are in the Arnold Selengut precancel collection. These are the only known printed precancels on any 1869 Pictorial stamps.
