VERY FINE AND RARE USE OF THE 1847 ISSUE WITH A CITY DESPATCH LOCAL POST MANUSCRIPT DIRECTIVE.
In a February 2005 Chronicle article by Gordon Stimmell, he notes that eight covers were discovered used from Portsmouth with either "Care of" or "Via" the City Despatch Post (a local post at this time). These are the only recorded 1847 Issue covers which are directed to go through a local post.
Ex DuPuy. P.F. certificate no. 424927 no longer accompanies.

VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED COMBINATION OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE WITH THE EAGLE CITY POST ISSUE ONE-CENT RED ADHESIVE. A MAGNIFICENT POSTAL HISTORY RARITY.
There are only two recorded 1847 Issue covers with Eagle City Post adhesives (Meyersburg census, Chronicle 156, November 1992, and confirmed in USPCS 1847 Census). The earlier is a March 3, 1849 cover with the "Sawtooth" adhesive (Scott 61L2, ex Gross, Sale 1041, lot 262, realized $15,500 hammer). This is the second cover, a July 25, 1850 use to Providence R.I. (Scott 61L3).
USPCS census no. 11015. Ex Hollowbush and Ring. Signed "Genuine P. H. Ward Jr.". With 2002 P.F. certificate. Listed but unpriced in Scott.
