This 6c plate block has beautiful rich color on bright white paper. It is one of the finest 6c Columbian plate blocks we have ever encountered. The unpunched perforations and white gum are characteristic of sheets that were printed by the American Bank Note Co. and finished (gummed and perforated) at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

Sale 1251, Lot 1162, 1893 Columbian Issue Plate Blocks (Scott 230-240)10c Gray Black, Columbian (237). Mint N.H. bottom imprint, plate no. 99 and letter "Y" block of eight, vibrant Gray Black shade, beautifully centered, fresh in every respect

EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED PLATE BLOCK OF EIGHT OF THE 10-CENT COLUMBIAN ISSUE.

This 10c plate block has the crackly white gum found on some Columbian stamps. The benefits of this white gum are brighter paper and its consistently crackly texture leaves no doubt that the gum is Mint Never-Hinged.

Sale 1251, Lot 1164, 1893 Columbian Issue Plate Blocks (Scott 230-240)30c Orange Brown, Columbian (239). Bottom imprint, plate no. 59 and letter "N" block of eight, original gum, lightly hinged, gorgeous color, outstanding centering, usual natural gum bends, few perf separations

EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR AND RARE PLATE BLOCK OF EIGHT OF THE 30-CENT COLUMBIAN ISSUE.

A Power Search review (which includes all of our Rarities sales) indicates that we have only sold approximately 14 plate blocks (of six or eight) plus a block of 18 containing two imprint and plate number multiples, which has probably been broken. Of these, several had thin spots or small tears. None of the plate blocks of eight were as well centered as the example offered here.

Sale 1251, Lot 1165, 1893 Columbian Issue Plate Blocks (Scott 230-240)50c Slate Blue, Columbian (240). Bottom imprint, plate no. 77 and letter "S" block of eight, original gum, most stamps Mint N.H., deep rich color and proof-like impression

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A DESIRABLE AND RARE IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF EIGHT OF THE 50-CENT COLUMBIAN ISSUE.

The 50c Columbian is the first value of the series that was printed in much more limited quantities, with 243,750 copies versus more than 617,000 of the 30c and millions of each of the 1c-15c (or more than a billion in the case of the 2c). It is scarce as a plate block -- especially in the larger eight-stamp size -- and it exists only from the bottom position due to the way the sheets from the 100-subject plates were cut and perforated. The $4.00 also exists only as a bottom plate block -- all the other Columbian values have top and bottom plate blocks.
