VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE MIXED-ISSUE FRANKING WITH THE 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL AND 6-CENT 1870 NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUES, PAYING TRIPLE 10-CENT RATE. THIS IS ONE OF THREE RECORDED 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL COVERS FROM CHINA, AND IT IS ONE OF TWO ADDRESSED TO THE UNITED STATES (THE OTHER IS ADDRESSED TO JAPAN).

The 12c 1869 Pictorial Issue is extremely rare used either to or from China, because it overpaid the 10c rate and there was no 8c stamp to make up the double rate. We have offered only two covers to China since keeping computerized records, both used with a 30c stamp to Hong Kong. The 1869 Census book does not list any from China. We are aware of only two others. One is used from Shanghai to Japan (Magnolia Part 3, Sale 1261, lot 722). The other to the United States is from the same correspondence and used on the same day to a different name at the same address (Magnolia Part 3, Sale 1261, lot 572).
