Sale 1259, Lot 4215, Senegal thru TahitiSOMALI COAST, 1902, "0,05'" on 1fr Olive Green & Black (24/25 var; Yvert 23/24 var). Large part original gum, large margins, fresh colors, a few minor flaws including a tiny thin speck (no faults mentioned on either certificate)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 1902 5-CENTIMES ON ONE-FRANC SURCHARGE.

The "0.05" surcharge was intended for the 75c stamp, and the "0.10" surcharge for the 1fr stamp. This "0.05" on 1fr stamp lay unknown in a European collection for decades, until its first public offering in a 1999 auction, where Mr. Venn purchased it. Therefore it is only the second time it has been publicly offered. No other copies have surfaced to date, making this the only known example.

How this error came about is hard to say. In 1899 the stamps of Somali Coast were revalued, with the new value handstamped on the stamps of the 1894-1900 series. A postal worker may have inadvertently handstamped just this one 1fr stamp before realizing their error, or a small number may have been incorrectly handstamped and the others lost to philately. And still yet, it could have been done intentionally, with the need for a 5c stamp and no 75c stamps available to surcharge. The handstamp clearly has the same characteristics as the "0.05" on 75c stamp.

This stamp is certainly worthy of listing in the major catalogues. In fact, it should be a major number since its genuineness is unquestioned but its origin unknown.

Signed Calves. With clear 1999 Behr and P.F. certificates. Unlisted in Scott or Yvert.
