Apr. 23 5:30PM 1883" duplex datestamp and oval grid cancel on cover with printed "Legation of the United States, Peking" return address with purple "Department of State" handstamp, to Ralph Meeker at the New York Herald in New York, intact red wax seal on back with clear lettering for "United States Legation China" with eagle illustration, Very Fine, a rare use, carried by diplomatic pouch to Washington D.C., where the stamp was affixed and it was sent to its final destination

Oct. 30 5:30PM 1883" duplex datestamp and oval grid cancel on cover with printed "Legation of the United States, Peking" return address with purple "Department of State" handstamp, to Ralph Meeker at the New York Herald in New York, "P.O. N.Y. 10-31-83" receiving datestamp on back, slightly reduced at right, some waterstaining, stamp with few small faults, still Very Fine, carried by diplomatic pouch to Washington D.C., where the stamp was affixed, rare use of the 2c stamp to pay the new 2c rate which went into effect October 1, 1883, Official stamps became invalid for postage July 5, 1884, so this was only valid to be used in this manner for a period of nine months, ex Canman and Bilden
