Sale 1270, Lot 2474, Mauritius thru New Britain (New Guinea)NEW BRITAIN (NEW GUINEA), 1914, 2p on 20pf Ultramarine, Surcharge Doubled, one "G.R.I." Albino, "1" for "I" (4a var; SG 4e var; Gibbs 4ba). Setting 1, position 10, original gum, lightly hinged, two clear strikes of "2d" and second partial "G.R.I." (mostly albino), complete strike showing "1" for "I" variety, bold colors, well-centered

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-PENCE ON 20-PFENNIG WITH BOTH THE DOUBLED SURCHARGE ERROR AND "1" FOR "I" VARIETY. A KEY RARITY OF NEW BRITAIN.

Only ten of the double surcharge with one G.R.I. albino were printed. The other known examples have the second "G.R.I." completely albino. This is likely due to the top selvage being folded over during overprinting. The "1" for "I" only occurs from position 10, making this the unique copy of both the error and variety.

Ex Marquess of Bute (with backstamp) and Creed. Signed Field and Buhler. With 2002 Gibbs certificate. Catalogued only as double surcharge without any premium for variety. Scott $6,000.00. SG £5,500

Sale 1270, Lot 2477, Mauritius thru New Britain (New Guinea)NEW BRITAIN (NEW GUINEA), 1915, 8p on 80pf Lake & Black on Rose, Surcharge Double (63 var; SG 64mf). Original gum, h.r., bold colors on fresh paper, well-centered

VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1915 8-PENCE ON 80-PFENNIG WITH DOUBLE SURCHARGE ON THE MARSHALL ISLAND ISSUE WITH 6MM SPACING. THIS IS A NEW DISCOVERY AND THE BASIS ON WHICH THE MOST RECENT STANLEY GIBBONS NUMBER HAS BEEN ADDED. AS SUCH, THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE.

This 8p on 80pf Second Printing of the Marshall Islands Issue with 6mm spacing is a rarity in its own right with few recorded. Previously, the only listed variety of this stamp was the Surcharge Inverted where only one has been recorded per Gibbs. As it has been over 100 years since issuance, it is highly likely this Surcharge Doubled will follow suit. It is quite remarkable that this major error has gone unnoticed for years and mistakenly identified as the First Printing with 5mm spacing. An incredible rarity of the highest magnitude for any British Commonwealth collection, especially for a collector of New Britain (New Guinea).

With 2022 B.P.A. certificate. Listed but unpriced in Stanley Gibbons. The catalogue value for the Surcharge Inverted (SG 64me) is £18,000 though this offering should define a conclusive future listing price
