Oct. 19, 1896" duplex datestamp and oval grid cancel on cover to the German Consulate in Chefoo, China, and forwarded to Berlin, Germany, datestamps on reverse include Yokohama (Nov. 7), Shanghai (Nov. 13) and Chefoo (Nov. 16) for inbound journey, as well as German arrival after forwarding (Dec. 25), corner card of a Chefoo company on flap, light file fold and No. 57 stamp with faint corner crease, Fine, a rare and colorful use, the use of purple ink for this Honolulu canceller is also unusual, ex Honolulu Advertiser

'Doric'" name-of-ship directive, clear strike of large purple "PACKET BOAT" handstamp, "U.S. Postal Sta. Shanghai, China Mar. ?" circular datestamp on back, Chefoo receiving backstamp (Apr. 1), forwarder's backstamp, file fold not affecting stamp or markings and minor edgewear, Very Fine, the UPU Convention of July 1891 added packetboat mail similar to earlier ship mail, letters mailed at sea could be prepaid with stamps of the country to which the vessel belonged, this paid double the UPU 5c rate
