Sale 1270, Lot 2031, Great Britain - Surface Printed thru King George VGREAT BRITAIN, 1884, 2sh6p Deep Lilac on Blued Paper from "White Paper" Period (Scott 96 var; SG 179a). Lettered K-D, intensely rich color on lightly blued paper, precise centering, clear strike of "Threadneedle St. SP 29 92" circular datestamp, Very Fine and choice, the 1883 Issue was first printed on this "revenue" paper to prevent reuse but as high values were not pen-cancelled, there was no need to use it, it is still debated why this particular paper was used during the 1884 printing but Wiseman theorized it was due to lack of stock controls at Somerset House and was accidental, this should not be confused with Scott No. 96a which is the earlier printing and is generally found in a much paler shade, with 2019 Brandon certificate, SG £3,600

Sale 1270, Lot 2033, Great Britain - Surface Printed thru King George VGREAT BRITAIN, 1884, 10sh Cobalt (109a; SG 182). Lettered G-E, spectacular centering with wide margins, lovely rich color in this exceptionally rare shade, neat strike of "Dundee FE 3 85" circular datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLY RARE SOUND USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1884 10-SHILLING IN THE COBALT SHADE. EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.

Wiseman's theory that this shade resulted from chemical treatment of the paper is conjectural. Without adequate studies, it is still debatable whether this shade is a chemical changeling or the result of different pigments used in printing. Specialists agree that this shade differs from Ultramarine and is truly rare.
