VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 1876 40-CENTIMES BLACK ON BLUE PAPER POSTAGE DUE. AN IMPORTANT RARITY OF THE WORLD AND ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PORTER W. VENN II COLLECTION.
The 1876 Postage Dues were actually the first stamps of Guadeloupe, issued eight years before the first postage stamps. They were typeset in black in sheets of twenty and produced locally. Two values, 25c and 40c, were made. All of the 25c were printed on white paper. The first three sheets of the 40c were produced on blue paper. However, this was deemed unacceptable and the remaining printing was done on white paper.
No more than 24 are recorded (all used) including seven on six covers. Power Search reveals no others offered by our firm since 1993 and including all Rarities of the World sales. Even some of the most comprehensive French Colonies collections ever formed (e.g. Edward Gilbert, David Markowitz and Rolfe Wyer) were lacking this stamp. The Venn copy is superior in quality to all of the other off-cover examples we were able to locate.
Signed Calves. With 1998 Behr certificate and with 2004 and 2005 Calves certificates. Scott $37,500.00. Yvert €50,000

VERY FINE. THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF SCOTT NO. 20 - THE SINGULAR COPY THAT WAS PRINTED.
While there are a few major catalogue number stamps in the world of which only one is known - there are practically no others in which only one was produced. It can only happen when one stamp in a setting is noticeably different from the rest. And still to produce a unique stamp, only one sheet with that different stamp could be printed. Such is the case with the Ivory Coast 1fr on 10c Parcel Post. The 3rd setting contained the "UN" surcharges. Twenty are the thin surcharge (Scott Q19; Yvert 8B), four are the thin surcharge without circumflex (Yvert 8Ba), and one (position 25) has the thick surcharge. Only one pane was ever printed.
After the fall of the hammer of this lot, only one collector in the world will be able to fill that long empty space in their album.
Signed Calves and J.F. Brun. With 1998 Behr and 2004 Calves certificates. Scott $46,000.00. Unpriced in Yvert and Maury. However Stanley Gibbons prices it at £49,000.
