VERY FINE. AN IMMENSELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF FRENCH CONGO SCOTT NO. 1. ONLY 100 PRINTED AND THE MAJORITY WERE USED.
The first stamps of French Congo were made by surcharging French Colonies stamps. It was decided to surcharge 3,000 1c stamps with a 5c overprint. The first sheet was surcharged in red, but the impression was determined to be unsatisfactory. The remaining 2,900 stamps were overprinted in black, creating Scott No. 2.
Of the small number of unused examples we were able to locate, the Venn copy compares favorably to all of them. Most are no gum, poorly centered, and/or have faults.
Signed A. Brun and Calves. With 2021 Scheller and Roumet certificates. Scott $6,500.00. Yvert €8,500
