Sale 1264, Lot 201, Essays and ProofsPost Rider. Vignette of post rider on a galloping horse, similar to the design of the 2c 1869 Pictorial, at top of Jan. 22, 1838 Post Office Department check for $14.68, signed by Postmaster General Amos Kendall, Very Fine and wonderful collateral item, several stamp or essay designs of the 1869 Pictorials are known with similar engravings on earlier bank notes or other financial documents, including the post rider (2c), train (3c), S.S. Adriatic (12c), Landing of Columbus (15c), Declaration of Independence (24c) and Surrender of Burgoyne (30c essay), the advent of slow motion "shutter film" in the late 1870s would prove the inaccuracy of the positions of the horse's legs in this design

Sale 1264, Lot 213, Essays and Proofs2c Brown, Panama-Pacific Small Die Proof on Wove (113P2a). Rich color with the normal paper toning of the genuine Panama-Pacific proofs

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL PANAMA-PACIFIC SMALL DIE PROOF.

In 1915 a limited special printing of 413 different small die proofs was created for the Panama-Pacific Exposition. They were printed on yellowish wove paper, and it is believed no more than five examples of each stamp were produced. This is the only 2c 1869 Pictorial we have offered since keeping computerized records. An example offered in one of our sales in 2000 was deemed to not be a true Panama-Pacific proof.
