Sale 1262, Lot 557, Essays, Proofs and SpecimensNational Bank Note Co., 10c Dim Rose, Declaration of Independence, Large Die Essay on India (116-E2a). On 80 x 57mm card, small corner thins from prior mounting far from the design

VERY FINE. A RARE 10-CENT 1869 ESSAY WITH THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE VIGNETTE ENGRAVED BY JAMES SMILLIE, WHICH WAS ULTIMATELY USED FOR THE 24-CENT DENOMINATION.

This vignette is a miniature engraving by James Smillie, based on a painting by Trumbull which hangs in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Contrary to popular belief, the scene depicted by Trumbull is not the signing ceremony, but the presentation of the draft. It has been written that the 30c stamp was changed from the Surrender of Burgoyne to the Eagle, Shield and Flags design to avoid offending the British. If true, it seems odd that officials would choose to use the Declaration of Independence "1776" design for the 24c stamp, which was far more likely to adorn mail to England (the basic rate was 12c).

Sale 1262, Lot 563, Essays, Proofs and Specimens2c National Parks, Imperforate (741 var). Strip of six from the bottom left corner of the sheet with huge margins, signed "Franklin D. Roosevelt 1934" at bottom, also part of a statement in manuscript likely referring to the sheet being pulled from the "press today", pencil Positions 146/191 written on back along with Stanley Gibbons backstamps and "FDR" on each stamp, bottom three stamps faint diagonal creases and faint waterstain, appears Extremely Fine, as discussed in the Scott Catalogue, Postmaster General James A. Farley gifted sheets of the National Parks and other issues, in imperforate form without gum, to several dignitaries, including President Roosevelt, the uproar this caused among collectors led to the mass printing of the imperforate sheets, now known as "Farley's Follies", this piece is not the Scott listed imperforate Farley No. 757, but rather a variety of the perforated issue No. 741, the presence of the Roosevelt signature (or one of the other recipients) or a datestamp on cover is the only way to verify that these are the unissued variety
