Sale 1270, Lot 2291, Cayman Islands thru Cook IslandsCEYLON, 1861, 2p Green, Clean-Cut Perf 14 to 15-1/2, Vertical Pair, Imperforate Horizontally (18b; SG 20a). Grid cancels, strong color, few faults including strong horizontal crease and small piece missing at right of top stamp

FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 1867 2-PENCE GREEN VERTICAL PAIR, IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WE ARE AWARE OF AND COULD LIKELY BE UNIQUE.

The 1861-64 Issue is well-known for having poorly produced perforations due to wear, poor cleaning, and proper servicing of the line machine used. It is a surprise that this error did not occur more often.

Listed but unpriced in both Scott and Stanley Gibbons. The only other value of this series with this error that is priced is the 1sh (SG 26a) which is given a value of £18,000 as used. We will let the market determine what value the pair offered here should command. With 1961 R.P.S. certificate
