Sale 1270, Lot 2157, Bermuda - Queen VictoriaBERMUDA, 1874, 3p on 1p Rose (11; SG 12). Unused (no gum), fresh color, centered to left as are all known examples

FINE AND RARE. THE 1874 3-PENCE ON ONE-PENCE SURCHARGE IS ONE OF THE KEY RARITIES OF BERMUDA WITH ONLY ONE PANE OF 60 OVERPRINTED.

This surcharge is technically considered a trial surcharge despite the fact that a few examples are known used postally prior to 1879. Of the original pane of 60, three blocks of four and one block of six are recorded. Of the remaining 42 singles, about eight are used and undoubtedly a few have been lost to philately, leaving a very small number of unused available.

Ex Burrus and Hicks. With 1963 B.P.A. certificate. Scott $19,000.00. SG £18,000.
